Quarto jogo da série, TOCA Race Driver levou a franquia para uma nova direção, já que o modo principal do jogo apresentava uma trama (levando o jogo a ser rotulado como "Car-PG"), onde o usuário assumia o papel de um piloto de corrida fictício chamado Ryan McKane, em que o objetivo era fazer seu nome em vários campeonatos de carros, o tempo todo sob a sombra de seu irmão mais velho de maior sucesso e assombrado pela morte de seu pai na pista de corrida (como testemunhou Ryan quando criança).
